Dear all,

Welcome to the June newsletter from the International Centre for Evidence in Disability which is being written from beautiful Kigali.

During May we started the fieldwork for our DFAT-funded project to assess the inclusion of people with disabilities in social protection programmes in Vietnam and Nepal. Fieldwork is underway in Danang Province in Vietnam, and we are looking forward to starting in Nepal in August. Tracey Smythe also started her fieldwork, investigating the services for children with clubfoot in Zimbabwe, and their impact. In June, we will be starting on the national survey of disability in Guatemala, working together with Conadi and CBM. June will also see the follow-up with families in Ghana to assess the impact of the Getting to Know Cerebral Palsy toolkit in their lives. Busy times!

Congratulations to ICED’s Maria Zuurmond and Tracey Smythe who successfully passed their PhD upgrade in May, and are now well on the way in their PhD research.

We are delighted to be hosting Dr Jill Hanass-Hancock, from MRC South Africa, at ICED in mid June. Many of you will know of her work on HIV and disability. Please join us for the evening seminar that she will give on this topic, followed by a drinks reception, on Thursday June 16 (5:30pm – 7:00pm) at LSHTM.

In case you missed it, we are inviting contributions to a special edition of the Disability and the Global South Journal on “Disability in the Sustainable Development Goals: Critical Reflections”, following on from the Symposium, website here. We welcome papers on a range of topics highlighted in the call, and these should be submitted by 15 October, 2016.

Best wishes,

Hannah Kuper and Allen Foster
